I hunt in close quarters a lot and shots rarely go beyond 80 yards in many circumstance, so I can rely on my ol' trusty 30-30.
I also have a Winchester .243 I'm partial too as well.
I think my all time favorite was a .260 Ruger M-77II I use to own, but did a dumb thing and sold it after deer season. I wish I hadn't of done that! I liked it.
Do you have a favorite caliber when chasin' whitetails?

Not being a " gun " hunter really , ( I have bowhunters mentallity , I want them at 25 yrds or nothing LOL) I have always used whatever was at hand . I shot my forst bruiser 4 point with a 303 british , and a doe with a 270 . All the rest I shot with sharp sticks ! I have about 5 pope & youngs with my bow however and enjoy it tremendously. Will be selling my deer rifles this year . L

Never have hunted a "whitetail". I like one gun for everything, so tend to use my Savage 110, .30-.06 for mulies, elk, and antelope. I did use my daughter's .243 for antelope this past fall though. Back in the day before my kids were interested in hunting, I bow hunted alot more and got most of my deer that way.

Bowhunting has always been a great love for me, but because of the time I spent in the field pursuing them, I still wanted to experience hunting, but without the time investment. When gun hunting, I still get the thrill of the hunt, but can get my time in the field, get my deer real quick and then move on to something else... like setting snares!

7mm Rem Mag...I like the knockdown power...remember our deer are usually bigger than their southern cousins. I mostly trophy hunt and I want them down hard when it hits. I know it's a bit overkill but it was the first gun I bought and I bought it as an all-around caliber, for deer, bear, elk and moose.

I have a 7mm-08 that i've shot tons of deer with, its pretty close to being a perfect deer rifle for the country I hunt...last couple years i've been carrying a .270, it works well too.

ihave four nice bucks on the wall my self with my biggest being a 168 ohio big buck ,i shot two of them with my bow and two with my 12 ga ithaca (here in ohio we can only carry shotguns) i have shot a lot of nice bucks with a shot gun crossbow and bow ,,(not trying to sound like some big shot) but a few years ago i though i needed to make it a little harder so i started carrying my rossi 50 cal muzzle loader during our gun season, that thing shot so nice and did a number on the deer ,i have yet to carry my shot gun during the gun season, you may want to think about a nice muzzle loader ,knowing you have only one shot ,made me take more time with my shot ,and that helped me harvest more deer with less tracking,,,

hello snareman, I like to use a 22.250 rem for caribou and smaller animals because some of my shots are less then 50 yards and I use a 300 win. mag. for moose because of the size and amount of power you need to take them bulls down. peter

With our posts we haven't even touched the amount of differences in people's choices for a deer rifle!.. and that spurred on the post idea. As a kid I shot deer with calibers that were too light to use. I never owned a big caliber before. The caliber that really has my interest besides the .260, is the 25-06. Looks like a real flat shooter. I once saw a new looking Ruger MK II in a 22.250 caliber, blued barrel, wood stock, for $300 at Gander Mountain. I can't use that for deer here legally and I don't coyote hunt much, so it's a caliber I didn't think I could use. I did go back to buy the gun at that price only days later to see it already sold! I myself like a browing compound bow with a good alluminum easton arrow and a good muzzy 3 blade broadhead at 100 grain. Thats my first choice
If i have to go to the next season you'll find me carrying a 300 savage model 99e. or my 7mm mauser or 8mm mauser and for long range hunting i'll take my dads mauser 25.06 he built himself.
I never cared for the lighter calibers such as 243,260 and so on only because ive seen to many guys wound deer. But you give them same calibers to a man who knows how to properly use them they can be just as deadly as the large caliber rifles.
IT IS ALL IN SHOT PLACEMENT

we shoot a .270 and a 30-06. between the son and i we have harvested about 30 deer with these two guns. the 270 is a Ruger and the 06 is a Savage both have worked well for us.
