Snarin' is my game large or small and snaring muskrat is a blast for me! I've snared them under the ice, feedbeds, trails or den entrances. If you want to snare them on the water, use a 4" snare with only an inch and a half under the water's surface. In a trail set, use a 3 3/4" loop 1 1/2" off the surface. I snare several mink each year and while snaring muskrat, have learned to use slightly larger loops for muskrat. I much prefer a 1/16" snare made from 7x7 cable with a loaded loop and a mini-lock specifically designed for 1/16" cable which locks better than using smaller cable... if you're concerned about dispatching your catch. For me, mink snares and muskrats must have an inline swivel in them to prevent twist offs. A mink can very easily twist 1/16" in half if he has the time or a non-swivelling snare. If you want to snare them at their under water den entrance, support and anchor snare off a stout stick stuck into the mud/ground next to channel/entrance and open loop no larger than 3 1/2" and stick right in front of the entrance towards the bottom half. You'll see him floating there when you come to check your set! Good Luck! Snareman

I sure wish I could try snaring mink and rats here but with our deer stop laws it would be pretty tough.

Yeah, I hear yah ADC... it's a bummer.
You know, an IA trapper told me last year his game warden where he was at did not have a problem with little mink snares. You should call or visit with your game warden and see what he says. You never know.
Welcome aboard!... Good Luck!

Check your regulations carefully no pun from the trapperman, with some master dude...
but I believe alot of states regulations are different if the snare is underwater.
Just a thought.

you still sore about that Airebus? ;D Our Iowa law clearly states ALL snares must have a deer stop. No exceptions even underwater. But it is a nice idea. Thanks for trying.
