Due to a time problem, I'm planning on just selling my coon in the carcass this fall. Does anyone know a good place to sell here in Eastern Iowa? Also how much are you docked for not skinning an average coon?

I don't know where you are in eastern Iowa but if you take I-35 north to Owatonna, MN, There is Northwest Trappers Supply. It's also called Cumberlands. I have sold furs there for about five years now and have always been treated fairly. I always sell on the carcass because I dont have the time or place to do the rest.

I sell to Jim Smith just east of Toledo. I highly reccommend him! He is not only a nice guy but he pays very well and as far as bieng docked for not skinning it is $1 or less per coon. I made more last year selling in the carcus than many of the guys who skinned and held them all til the end of season as the price dropped on the coons at the end of season.

Jim would probably be a good bet.
Other options would be Paul Merschman at West Point Iowa or meeting Groenwold when he runs his route through there.
Merschman has a carcass market and may be an assett for you..........

Merschman isnt the only one with a carrass market and you can bet you arn't gettin paid more if they do have a market, I wouldnt go to Growny if he was the last guy out there.

First I would wait and watch the coon market, it is diving like a ball of lead! The sounds of the market are if russia doesn't start buying the end product look for really cheap coon prices next fall in the 8-12.00 range even though you have an excellent coon in your area, as far as Groenwolds I sold fur to them for 20 years when in IA and you build a repoir with any buyer some buyers for Greonwolds are decent guys, and I can tell you the last 3 years I sold coons to them green skinned, I made 3.25 a pelt better than the best average from either Canadian auction! People must relize not all of any species is grade 1 XXL and those smaller, less prime and mishandled goods are what tanks your average. I look only at my across the board average price: high and low means nothing if I sell 120 coons I know going into the deal roughly what kind of check I'm looking for and will accept and most times I'm within a 20.00 bill for the lot! No different than coyotes or cats I know roughly what I should expect for my fur. Then leave some room for bartering. With our very depressed fur markets, there is a smaller gap of being profitable and loosing money, outside of the cat market, the coon, fox, coyote, and mink markets don't leave much room for error on the buyers part, they must buy with a cautious eye and those that don't don't stay around for long, being realistic is what more trappers need to be, we have all felt jilted or taken at some point, but we also think our lot of fur is the best of the best at times too

I was wondering if the coon market stays the way it has( low end coon completely sold and the decent stuff held back) will the country buyers want to buy carcass coon with little turnaround when they sell finished? I put my coon up so if I don't like the price, I don't sell ( atleast you have some leverage). Most guys would rather give their coon away because you just can't re-freeze 50 coon at once and that really hurts the market. I've seen it many times waiting in line to sell to Groeny, last year I was going to sell early green coon(mid Nov. Iowa coon) because they were paying $13-$15 averages but as always the markets went sour, so I put mine up and sold everything for $12.50 ave. late in the year. So hopefully with low prices more trappers will put fur up and get paid their market value but I understand some trappers have time restraints and have to sell carcass = more time catching=more coon.
