I used to use real light 3/64" 1x7 for under ice Beaver and had good luck. But after talking with Rally Hess, I coverted over to "Loaded" 3/32 7X7 with Reichart Slammer Lock due to their weight. Works real well and it's less of a tangled mess when I make a catch.

LOL! You must be over where that guy caught that puny northern pike! I don't have what you would call a retail shop.. just a work shop with equip strewn where it fits!
I like the loaded snares because it helps them close to a smaller diameter loop and it is more sensitive... allowing front paws to get caught too. The reverse bend lock is a good lock to use. Due to it's weight, it does close smoother/quicker... which is good to help combat the bouyancy water gives everything. I like the 3/32" 7x7 with the Slidefree as well.
As with most snaring, the larger diameter cables are more forgiving and pelt friendly... and this goes for under ice as well. The results is not in so much how the fur looks where the lock or cable layed, but the mark around the leather. If one did not use loaded snares, I would recommend 5/64" 7x7 with the 3/32" Slidefree lock. Smaller diameter cables slide easier in locks that are upsized.
I can't wait to get out there this winter. I got cut short last winter due to very high snow levels which prevented me from getting where I wanted to go with a common 4x4 pickup.
