I see on several guys signatures that they are members of their state trapping assoc. and some are members of NTA and FTA....some are members of more than one states assoc. No offense meant and none taken by your response....BUT...What is your reason for joining a trapping org.? AND more/most importantly what are your reasons for not joing others like NTA and FTA...I'll even throw the NRA in there? Threads like these have been discussed in other forums and some good info has been thrown around. It makes people think and ponder issues like money, politics, and trappings future. So....lets hear from you.

Mine was simple. For too many years I wasn't apart of my own state's association and felt I wanted to help the cause.... actually do something I feel is right and at least contribute one small thing... and started that first step by joining my state's trapping association. I joined the NTA to be a member for similar reasons, but to get their magazine too so I can be more informed and educate myself to the problems trappers face on a national level. I really don't understand people's problems with seperate organizations. You'll see people upset with NAFA or Furharvesters, etc, and they'll either favor one or the other and voice "against" the other. Same with the FTA and NTA. I've seen a few minor squabbles about each and feel this fruitless conversation to have an argument of which one is better and why is without basis. Each are organizations to support trapper rights, period. I haven't joined the FTA because I haven't gotten to it yet. I'll also be joining other state associations as well. I'm not heavy into the polictics of trapper associations. I hear the "behind the doors" issues some talk about, but don't put too much stock into such talk... but it is interesting listening. LOL!

Life member of FTA and have been for about 25 years. I believe I am a member of NTA untill 2030 or so. I have never been a member of the ATA, but I have donated several thousands of dollars via donated hunt or just hand Cindy a 100 dollar bill from time to time, and have sent monies anonamously for many years. I do belong to the ISTA, but I believe my membership ran out, but I will be joining very soon. I have also belonged to many other org's over the years. I am currently a member of the Reform Party of the NTA and have donated several thousnd dollars to them as well. Money is like manure, for it to do any good, you have to spread it around. Steve

Steve, good questions. Always worth reviewing why we do the things we do and why we believe what we believe, lest we become compliacent.
I've joined many of the organizations you have listed for political reasons. Simply put, they need our money to fight off the antis. I have been involved in politics for quite awhile and, beleive me, it is one dirty business. Makes no difference what the issue, the outcomes always depend on M-O-N-E-Y. Forget being right, forget history and heritage, the groups that spend the most usually come out on top. When an issue goes before legislature, be it county level, state or the Feds, they all follow the money trail. They want to know how many people does this issue affect, whats the impact on my local economy and how can they use it to their benefit.
When it comes to trapping and hunting, organizations that come forward can provide membership numbers, circulation numbers for journals and trade magazine and their advertizers/sponsor's can provide dollars spent in the local economy. If you can manage to round up a standup guy from your State DWR, hunting license fees, etc can all be added in.
Lots of other ways to make the numbers look good, but the bottom line is it takes lots of money to fight a political battle. We should all join as many of these organizations as our wallet allows.

To support trapping and be as active as I can, which I might mention I fail at most of the time compared to the officers in the organizations who are on the front lines and catch all the flak from the members of the organizations and these forums and get very little credit for the effort they put forth!!
