Just wondering how many of you trappers out there trap marten, this winter I'm going to set for some as we are starting to get more here ever winter. I was thinking of buying belisle conibers in 120 or a 160. Which one would be better for marten and fisher, maybe the 120 would be to small for fisher? Thanks and have a great 4th of july.

My favorite trap for fisher is the 220 Belisle Super X. When a fisher gets in them, they WILL be dead. Some prefer the 160 because they say they expire faster. I don't doubt this as the striking bars would be naturally closer to the base of the neck and backside of skull. There must be some after the catch evidence they're using to come to the conclusion they're being killed quicker too. The 120 is a fine marten trap and it will kill female fishers. The male has a large head and you would be hard pressed to get males to consistantly stick their head in the smaller opening of the 120.
There are now marten moving into my area more than ever before. In the past if I wanted to trap them, I would have to travel to the north more. I was thrown off a few times 2 years ago trying to identify tracks which I thought were grey squirrel tracks in areas and trees where they don't normally frequent at.
I love winter trapping for fisher. Can't wait to get out there again. I'm going to use less traps this year for them and snare them on running poles and cubbies.
Good luck,

If one wanted to snare martin, would he basically use the same snare as for mink?

Yes, except I would have the snare loop about a 1/2" larger, but same lock, cable, etc.

The 120 is a darn good marten trap but for marten/fisher areas the 160 is better.
For fisher I am starting to like my 160s alot and am considering going strictly to them. Dont have any marten in my area I am currently fisher trapping and dont expect them.

steven49er,
How will you use the 160's for fisher? Box/cubby sets? Running poles?
Do you think you'll set them any different than using a 220?

Snareman I set them in the white square pails. I set them the same as 220s as I use both with the same set up.
Refusals on the 160s has been nonexistant to date.
My main reason for going more towards the 160 is less "suitcasing" of the animal. It amazes me how a 12 pound male fisher can squirm through the trap and not set it off immediatly.

Snareman a picture speaks a thousand words. Last winter i set mainly on the ground because mice werent a problem. If it looks like there is going to be alot of mice I will get the set off the ground. I have had comments of this particular set location being a "nontraditional" fisher location. Looks are deceiving this spot is a killer. Two seperate woodlots kitty corner from each other seperated by a drainage. Good crossing spot from woods to woods.
