Got into some lynx country. 40 mile snogo ride, but it's worth it. Here's a pic of some of the country I'm working in, when the weather is better than the last pics I posted.
I know this doesn't look like the kind of lynx country your used to seeing pics of, but it is. You just have to find the drainages with the snowshoe rabbits and the lynx are there too. See............here's one I caught this weekend:
Here's a close shot. He's in a trap, but there was a snare set next to where he is, just in case he didn't have enough interest in the bait/lure:
I rarely set just one trap or one snare. I like to use bait /lure, but they aren't always hungry or curious, so a snare or 2 is left near the set to hopefully pick them up approaching or departing the set area. Here is a typical set I make:
I'm often making sets in narrow, brushy draws. I carry a pair of pruning shears and walk across the draw, on snowshoes if the snow is deep, and cut out a narrow trail. A baited set is placed in the middle of the draw with snares set on my trail on either side. If I don't get the lynx in the trap, i usually pick him up in a snare.
Wolverine are around too, Got this one last weekend. He was also in a snare trap combo, but managed to get out of the trap before he succumbed to the snare:
This area I'm working is right along the Iditarod Trail in western alaska. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is in progress now, tho most teams have finished.
Probably will quit this next weekend. We had a warm rainy spell this past week and if that happens again, snogo travel could get difficult. Besides, the bears will be soming out soon!
