It was a very hot MN summer day. I was at my brother's trailerhouse he was getting set up and almost finished moving in. It use to belong to my uncle. While helping my brother move the last of his stuff, I noticed a hummingbird inside the trailer house. Well, for those of you who are familiar with trailer houses, you then know they can get HOT! This day was no different.
I asked my brother if he saw the hummingbird in the house?.. and he said "Yeah, been seeing him in here everytime I stop in to move more stuff. I asked him how he got in and he said he didn't know. He said maybe by a hole in the wall or something. Well, knowing wild animals, I knew this was very strange.
The humming bird was on top of the curtain rack above the main sliding glass doors that seperate the wooden deck porch and the living room. I calmly went over to him fully expecting him to zoom away. As I got closer, I slowed down and talked to him in a calm soothing voice. Couldn't believe it when the humming bird let me pick him up. I had him in my palms cupped so he couldn't fly away... but then opened them to watch him fly away, but he stayed in my hand. I looked at his eyes and noticed he looked almost 1/2 way sleeping and he hung his head weak.
From what my brother said, the bird has been there for a couple of days or so... can't really remember. I asked him if he had some hummingbird food, but he said no. I knew this hummingbird was in trouble. He was terribly weak. I ended up placing the bird in a box, left him at the hot trailer and flew home to get some h-bird food. I was back within 20 minutes. I pre-mixed a batch of the red stuff and brought it back. I also brought a hummingbird feeder. I don't know what I was thinking, but I did place some in a tea cup and got the bird from the box. He was sitting on my right thumb like a little trained falcon and he didn't fly. I brought up the tea cup with the humming bird food water mix up to him and immediately saw his little tongue stick out and right away he started drinking!!!!!!!!!!
I let him have his fill and then placed him back in the box for a while and did the same thing about 15 minutes later. Each time the bird could have flown away, but he didn't. After feeding him the 2nd time, I checked him over and walked outside with him. He sat on my palm after I uncovered him with my other hand. He sat there for a moment and then I made a slight motion with my hand to see him fly straight up real high in a nearby norway pine tree. He was out of sight.
I couldn't help think that he wasn't going to last the rest of that day. Kinda made me mad at my brother for being a city slicker. I'm glad I was there that day to witness that. It's almost as if that hummingbird knew I was his salvation. I don't know how long hummingbirds live, as it was about 3 years ago, but I often think about him. A hummingbird came to my birdfeeder a few moments ago and I looked into his eyes and was reminded of "my" hummingbird that one hot summer day.
