Do you think a dead shad with a little catfish bait on the hook would work? ( I've never used a bank pole before)

I doubt the catfish bait would help much as it will wash off in a short amount of time.I'd just use the shad. The trick is to keep the bait fresh though once all the juices are soaked out of the bait it really loses its attractiveness to the catfish. Be sure to cut the shad up some too to start the juices flowing. Like I've said before live bait is the best way to go though. Have you tried setting some minnow traps in the holes in small creeks around? you can get several nice bait sized chubs that way and they are pretty easy to keep alive.

I put a couple out last Sat. night. Used bluegill cut bait. Caught a 4 lb. channel and a 5 lb. largmouth bass. Have you ever caught bass on a diddy pole?

My uncle caught a 4.5 lb bass the other night on a jug using bluegill for bait, and yes we did release it ...... right into the fryer.
