I am curious as to how long you all have been trapping/snaring. I have only been at it a little over 22 years. Still got a lot to learn. I cut my teeth trapping muskrats at the ripe old age of 13. I slowed down for a few girl chasing years but I always managed to get out a few traps. How long have you all been at it and how did you get started?

I set my first trap when I was 10. I was hooked from the first catch. Been using snares for only 4-5 years. Being raised on a ranch really helped. Dad couldn`t catch a coyote if his life depended on it so he made me set the traps. He would shake his head every time I caught one. I`m now 45 so I guess I`m getting old.

I set traps in 1966, so I've trapped some nearly every year since, about 39 years. I'm 52 . Mostly coon, beaver, otter, mink.

My Greatgrandmother bought me a pocket knife and three longsprings at the ripe ol' age of 8. She would be waiting for me to get off of the school bus every evening, and take me 10 miles out to our family farm to check those three (empty) traps. That was 27 years ago and I've never missed a year of setting at least a few traps.

trapping comes along way down for me, I've learned from my father when I was 12 and have been doing it on and off for some years. I just got back into it this fall and have made a few bucks for the x-mas holidays. This is my first 6 weeks for snaring for wolves but no luck yet, maybe when the caribou start there migration back north again my luck will change.

I ran my first "line" when I was eight. A rabbit box line...lol That was 40 years ago this year. I got my first steel the next year and have trapped at least some almost every year since. I think I have missed two or three years that I never set any traps at all.
As far as snaring now, I only started useing these things about 4 years ago. Then for beaver only. I have taught myself a coon set with snares in water, and have caught a few rats to. But beaver have been so far my most caught critter in snares. I hope that changes next year. or this year if I ever get to KY. lol

Hey, glad you got your password!
Could you explain a little about this set you are talking about above?

Started at the age of eight. I am 46 now, started trapping rats and as the fur prices increased so did the trap thiefs. I decided I needed to move off the ditches and river, so I started fox and dry land coon trapping. That was the start of my passion for trapping canines. SteveW

I guess it all started in 1997 when i decide to set a trap for our neighbors cat. we" me and my younger brother" set a no 2 victor underneath the hedges were we seen the cat go threw and took a dead shiner put it underneath the trap wired it to a cement block and hoped for the best. The next day we went to check the trap and was surprised to find a groundhog wating for us we pulled him up to the yard but wasnt sure how to kill it we were only 11 years old and wasnt really aloud to shot the 22 without dad so we took our bb guns and it took a while but we dispatched it. That my friends is how i got started trapping and have been doing it for 8 years now and im gettin better every year with experence.

Thanks Snareman, This aint no new set, I just had never tried to snare coon before and had to learn how to set it where it would work for me. It is a fish stick set where I use two snares is all. I used only one snare, like I had foothods before, and caught nothing. Just knocked the snares down and stole the fish. So, I used two snares and set them at an angle making two little logs for the coon to travel on. Works pretty well, many doubles in fact. A set I have been trying to get figured out is one along undercut banks to. I know coon travel under these, but haven't been able to find the right setup yet. We have to have our snares half under water so it limits things. Maybe we can get the new BIll passed and we can really use snares Bruce

If the water is not 2 swift i like to find a log/large rock in the water and set snares on eather side,i just make my loops alittle larger as the coon wiil b fishing under the log, this was a set i saw in calvin cobb,s book and tried and it doeswork for coon, otter, mink and rats, just adjust the loop, and ad a drowning rig isnice you never know what the catch will b.blackkettle
